Works well

I was having a hard time finding a suitable product to adhere a carpet pad to a concrete basement floor so I could stretch the actual carpet without the pad bunching. I purchased a cheaper product from my local Lowes that didn’t work well. While this product was a bit expensive, it worked very well. I believe I could have stretched it a little to allow it to go a bit further, but since I had never used this product, I followed the recommendations listed on the label.

stickiest stuff ever

Bought this to repair a hole in our carpet (glued down the patch). It looks great now and has been vacuumed over several times with no signs of pulling up. Also used it to clue a floor mat down to the cement in the garage, then used it to glue insoles into my dress shoes. Works great, is repositionable for a minute or so but once its dry, its crazy sticky. Comes off with Goo Gone. Only word of caution is that its blue, so dont get it on your clothes or the top side of your carpet!

Carpet pad

This stuff is very nice. It is hands down the best padding choice. If you are looking for the best this is it. Very comfortable with a extremely long life expectancy. *We used felt padding under our laminate flooring and it turned out perfectly. Very good at deadening sound. Six years and still enjoying a quiet floor. If you ever walked on laminate floor and heard the click clack it had foam padding.

This also solves the moisture problem with foam padding under area rugs. When foam is used on a hard surface it draws in the moisture and breeds mold overtime. Felt has a much better life expectancy with its ability to dissipate the moisture. Overtime the moisture from the foam can damage a laminate floor.

I love this Pad. I can’t believe how quick I received it.

I purchased this pad for a 8′x11′ wool rug in my living room. I wrote to the seller beforehand. They responded right away. They said they would custom cut it for me at no extra charge, so it would be just an inch smaller than my rug all the way around. So I ordered it on a Monday night and received it Friday afternoon. Wow lightening fast. I had told them in an earlier message that I would place it on a hardwood floor. They packed it so that the fluffy side was up just like I would need it.(I think you’re supposed to lay the fluffy side down if you place it on carpet). I was able to lay it out easily and very quickly I had a very cushy rug in my room. I had been concerned that this pad might be too thick and squishy. It is not. My family is very pleased with the rug pad. I am not only pleased with the pad but with the low price and the excellent service I received from Keockritz. I would not hesitate to buy from them again.

Another great rug pad that i purchased. Will be ordering another big one. We love how cushy our rug is now. We.re completely happy with it. Price was vry good too. We bought 2 diff rug pads for 2 diff rug sizes and both eorked out so well. I researched a lot to find what kind i needed and this was a good quality selection. Both pads we love and now we plan on enhancing a room size rug in another room.

Do you want cheap carpet that you may effortlessly install yourself? Well, I once carpeted a huge bedroom for a total cost of when it comes to $12. You read that right, and no, the carpet was not applied carpet. I did it with carpet samples.

This tape really works for us! I wanted to wait well over a month to give a quality review.

We have an oriental runner 2.5′ wide by 20′ long going down a hallway which itself is already wall-to-wall carpeted. Somehow this carpet-on-carpet combo mixes with foot traffic to generate a bizarre phenomenon in which the oriental runner crawls sideways about an inch per day with freakish determination in an attempt to climb the right hand wall. If we didn’t constantly drag it back into place (I probably just imagined hearing it scream in frustration) the runner would wrinkle itself into a bunch against the baseboard in about two weeks.

The tape solved all that. But I have some advice.

FIRST: Lay the tape strips *parallel* to the direction of carpet drift. We tried an experiment in which half the runner had short strips width-wise across the bottom and the other half had two long strips lengthwise. The lengthwise section of runner managed to break free and make about two inches of progress in about 3 weeks. We re-did everything using the short, width-wise strip scheme, and the thing has not budged in 2 or 3 weeks now.

SECOND: Any two-sided tape has the difficult-to-remove backing problem. This tape is not too bad, but to make things easy on yourself: Cut the tape at a steep angle so there is a sharp point to work on, and then press HARD to get the tape adhering well. Then it is easy to lightly pick with your nail at the sharp corner to get the backing started off the tape.

Really happy we don’t have to wrestle with our oriental runner any more!

Since I wrote this review, thought I would update it to report that I do have to replace the tape once every few months or so. But still well-worth it.

Double-sided Carpet Tape

I think this double-sided carpet tape is wonderful, and it does what nothing else was able to do, and that is: to adhere carpet runners to carpet on the floor. It worked perfectly for me, and I would recommend it to anyone who has to do the same. It’s fairly easy to remove the backing…I’ve got arthritis, so it’s not quite as easy as it would normally be to remove the backing from one side of the tape.

Survives a 3 year old and an infant…

I used this product to hold down area rugs in my living room, one being as you come into the door onto our new carpet. It has been down for about 4 months and rugs are all still in place, even after my three yr old has picked at the edges and spilled things on it, my 9 month old has put a thousand miles crawling over it, and foot traffic has been severe. Great!

funky smell

I don’t have any issues with mat other than strong funky smell. I tried to air it for a week, wash with soap and with boiling water. Nothing helped. I am sure smell is not toxic, only somehow whole room started smell like that and I don’t like it. I guess it problem with every mat but I still very upset.
As far as size goes – one mat contain 8 squires (2 red, 2 yellow, 2 blue, 2 green). So, as appears from one customer image, 4 sets were put together

We bought several packs of these when my girls were old enought to start having tummy time. These are cheaper at Sams Club, thats where we got ours.

The color tile part is textured, non-slip and easy to clean. I use Clorox Spray anywhere, just spray it on 1 foam tile at a time and wipe dry with a paper towel. It doesn’t absorb moisture which is great.

The color side is not as soft as the solid black side but my girls have fallen and banged their heads on it many times when they were first learning to crawl and they never had any problems. If you think its too hard for your baby you can either use the black side or use a blanket.

My parents bought some of the foam tiles that have the removable letters in them several years ago, these are WAY better. The letters DO get lost and also wear out easily, plus it is a huge pain in the butt to have to put all the letters back in when you need to have the solid tiles. The tiles have lots of wear as well. My best friend has some solid square tiles similar to mine but they feel cheaper and have several gouges in them(bought same time as we bought these), plus the tiles don’t seem to fit perfectly together. My tiles connect together perfectly, there are no gaps what so ever!! My best friend & parents both like our mats better and wish they had these instead…these would make a great baby shower gift, especially if someone has bare floors.

We’ve got laminate flooring in our livingroom and put together 6 pieces to place our girls Jumperoos on. Not only do these protect the floors, they keep my girls from sliding all over(they go crazy in those things) and it also keeps their feet warmer from the bare floor. We’ve had their jumperoos on these foam mats for well over a year and they don’t have indentations or any wear what so ever!

We’ve used these while doing home improvement projects to protect our knees/backs, they work great, especially if you double them black side up…MUCH better than knee pads!!

We just recently put a piece of exercise equipment in the living room(one of those crazy Gazelle things you see Tony Little doing on infomercials) I got it from my parents and figured I might actually work out if I can watch TV as I do it so we put 4 of these mats down and voila! I am now exercising daily while watching TV!! My husband had to dissasemble the machine a few days ago and there were no signs of wear or indentations.

Anytime we have something that might damage the floor we get out these mats and they do a perfect job. They are so convenient, you can either move them as 1 big piece since they are lightweight and stay together well or you can break them down into individual squares easily…although they stay together well, if you want them to come apart, they do so easily too.

What a nice investment, you can use these for your baby and then have them for many other uses for years and years.

Oh yea, forgot to mention that the dog & cat like these as well. Both of them have their own beds & both of them are allowed on all of our furniture but they end up laying on these mats all the time. It’s funny when our English Bulldog(who we’ll just say he likes to eat) he will try to fit himself on a little edge that is sticking out from their jumperoos with most of his body hanging off ; )

These are SO durable. If I were to throw a Twinkie, my Gazelle & these mats in the trash and they went to a landfill, I think in 100 Million years you would find a cockroach working out on the Gazelle that is sitting on these mats. I know what you’re thinking “why is the cockroach working out?” Because he ate the Twinkie, of course ; )

What is the sheer best way to clean carpet? Carpet manufacturers are closely unanimous. The best way is to use hot-water extraction, likewise called steam cleaning. Shaw Industries, for example, which is the world’s biggest carpet manufacturer, recommends only hot-water extraction.

It is also commended that you use truck-mount units, since portable machines don’t have as much suction power and heat. Hot-water extraction is not the only way, though. You may dry-clean your carpet as well. A discussion of both methods follows.

Dry Cleaning Carpet

There are assorted variations of arid cleaning. None of these, by the way, involves rinsing your carpet when finished. One method uses a foam that dries in your carpet and then is vacuumed up. It is doubtful that all the residue may be extracted.

Another method uses a cotton bonnet that spins. This is meant to absorb the dirt in your carpet. There are some questions as to how deeply this method may clean your carpet.

Finally, there’s a dry-cleaning compound that looks like wet sawdust. This is brushed into your carpet, where the dirt adheres to it. When it’s dry, it is vacuumed out.

Given their doubtful effectiveness, why are these methods used? The important reason may be that the instrumentation costs less. In fact, it is thousands of dollars less than hot-water extraction equipment.

Steam Cleaning Carpet

It is genuinely hot-water extraction, but it steams a lot. It is also the best way to clean carpet. A good truck-mount hot-water extraction unit forces very hot water into the carpet beneath high pressure, and then sucks it (and the dirt) out thoroughly. “Steam cleaning,” as it is normally called, has the following advantages:

- The high heat kills bacteria, fungus, mold, and dust mites, making it the healthiest way to clean carpet.

- It doesn’t leave residue, if it’s done correctly. Detergent residues attract dirt, which may harm carpet.

- The high pressure cleans carpet more deeply.

- The strong vacuum also cleans carpet more deeply.

- Heat actually helps! Above 118 degrees fahrenheit, each 18 degrees higher changes chemical reactivity by 100%. Hot water extraction cleaning is done amongst 150 and 200 degrees. Is that too technical? The bottom line is that it’s just the best way to clean carpet.

These are great multifunctional mats but are overpriced here. Identical package of 8 w/ border pieces by same manufacture at your local Sam’s Club for $20.33 plus tax.

funky smell

I don’t have any issues with mat other than strong funky smell. I tried to air it for a week, wash with soap and with boiling water. Nothing helped. I am sure smell is not toxic, only somehow whole room started smell like that and I don’t like it. I guess it problem with every mat but I still very upset.
As far as size goes – one mat contain 8 squires (2 red, 2 yellow, 2 blue, 2 green). So, as appears from one customer image, 4 sets were put together

We bought several packs of these when my girls were old enought to start having tummy time. These are cheaper at Sams Club, thats where we got ours.

The color tile part is textured, non-slip and easy to clean. I use Clorox Spray anywhere, just spray it on 1 foam tile at a time and wipe dry with a paper towel. It doesn’t absorb moisture which is great.

The color side is not as soft as the solid black side but my girls have fallen and banged their heads on it many times when they were first learning to crawl and they never had any problems. If you think its too hard for your baby you can either use the black side or use a blanket.

My parents bought some of the foam tiles that have the removable letters in them several years ago, these are WAY better. The letters DO get lost and also wear out easily, plus it is a huge pain in the butt to have to put all the letters back in when you need to have the solid tiles. The tiles have lots of wear as well. My best friend has some solid square tiles similar to mine but they feel cheaper and have several gouges in them(bought same time as we bought these), plus the tiles don’t seem to fit perfectly together. My tiles connect together perfectly, there are no gaps what so ever!! My best friend & parents both like our mats better and wish they had these instead…these would make a great baby shower gift, especially if someone has bare floors.

We’ve got laminate flooring in our livingroom and put together 6 pieces to place our girls Jumperoos on. Not only do these protect the floors, they keep my girls from sliding all over(they go crazy in those things) and it also keeps their feet warmer from the bare floor. We’ve had their jumperoos on these foam mats for well over a year and they don’t have indentations or any wear what so ever!

We’ve used these while doing home improvement projects to protect our knees/backs, they work great, especially if you double them black side up…MUCH better than knee pads!!

We just recently put a piece of exercise equipment in the living room(one of those crazy Gazelle things you see Tony Little doing on infomercials) I got it from my parents and figured I might actually work out if I can watch TV as I do it so we put 4 of these mats down and voila! I am now exercising daily while watching TV!! My husband had to dissasemble the machine a few days ago and there were no signs of wear or indentations.

Anytime we have something that might damage the floor we get out these mats and they do a perfect job. They are so convenient, you can either move them as 1 big piece since they are lightweight and stay together well or you can break them down into individual squares easily…although they stay together well, if you want them to come apart, they do so easily too.

What a nice investment, you can use these for your baby and then have them for many other uses for years and years.

Oh yea, forgot to mention that the dog & cat like these as well. Both of them have their own beds & both of them are allowed on all of our furniture but they end up laying on these mats all the time. It’s funny when our English Bulldog(who we’ll just say he likes to eat) he will try to fit himself on a little edge that is sticking out from their jumperoos with most of his body hanging off ; )

These are SO durable. If I were to throw a Twinkie, my Gazelle & these mats in the trash and they went to a landfill, I think in 100 Million years you would find a cockroach working out on the Gazelle that is sitting on these mats. I know what you’re thinking “why is the cockroach working out?” Because he ate the Twinkie, of course ; )

If you have wrinkles in your carpet then it is time to stretch your carpet. A simple way to know if it’s time to stretch is go to the center of the room and grab the carpet. Try to lift it up and then let go. If the carpet does not snap right back into place then you need to have your carpet re-stretched. Tin-can to almost Mercedes feeling, no joke!

I’ve had the dynamat installed in my ’04 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport for about a month now and it was well worth the effort. When I say effort, I tore out my entire interior to install this stuff. Inner and outer door skins, entire floor (doubled up in places), trunk (doubled up again), rear hatch, and under my hood. It took a total of about 17 hours to install and trashed my hands, cuts and sore for several days. I used the dynamat heavy-duty roller for most of the installation and the handle of the roller to push the material into tight crevacises. My entire car, exluding the roof, took 2 3/4 bulk packs. I still have some left over and trying to figure out what to do with it…

The results: You could say I was skeptical like other users, mostly because I hadn’t known anyone who used it or what dynamat was even made of really. It’s basically sheets of tar (butyl rubber) backed with thick aluminum foil. This stuff is heavy, but pretty thin and tucks into tight places pretty easily. While at first I noticed an increase in my cars weight, it seems to be less noticable the more I drive. What’s more noticable is the quiet ride and solid-feeling the car now has. The doors really do close with a thud and not that reverberating tin-can sound like before. The entire chassis feels much more rigid and stiff, like a higher priced, luxury car. My roommate, who drives a Benz C-class, said the stiffness was immediately apparent and the road noises was significantly reduced. This girl loves to drive and she was pretty impressed with the results.

The amount of road noise from freeways was almost difficult to carry on conversations or listen to music clearly before. Much more quiet now. If you’ve ridden in a subaru impreza, you know how loud they are! While it’s not Lexus quiet, it’s much, MUCH better than a stock subaru. There’s still some noise, but I wasn’t able to cover the firewall as much as I would have liked and my tires are lousy. When new tires are needed, I’m going back to a quality set and that should help a lot more. (BTW, Bridgestone-made Fuzion HR’s suck a$$, but they are cheap.) I’m going with Bridgestone Turanza’s next time.

My intention was purely to block out road noise and make a more comfortable environment for myself and passangers. A bonus to killing the road noise was the improvement in my cars audio quality. I had previously installed an Alpine h.u., Alpine speakers and Audiobahn d-class amp w/ a 10″ sub and it really brought my system to life. I never knew what mid-bass was till after the dynamat was installed. I’m amazed to get that much thump, out of 6 1/2″ door speakers!! I had to go back into the headunit and re-adjust my equalizer because the entire soundstage totally changed. It really allows me to enjoy my music to it’s fullest without an amp for the door speakers, which is nice! My music consists mostly of hardcore, metal-core, metal and punk. The dynamat really brought out crisp, clean sound that wasn’t distorted at higher volumes like before. It’s also allowed me to tune in really precise and crisp bass hits from my single 10″, enough to make my rearview mirror droop with each hit. I love hearing and feeling the kick drums in heavy music.

All-in-all, I am extremely pleased with the results. At first I was tired and my hands and back ached from two straight days of installation, all the while thinking “what the hell am I doing!?”. But now, I can sit back on a drive, carry on conversations without raising our voices, listen to my music with better definition and clearity, or enjoy a nice peaceful interior alone. It’s been well worth the effort.

Would I do it all over again??

In a heartbeat on this car. Hopefully the next car will be more quiet from the factory… if not, I’ll probably dyanmat that one too!

My doors go “kfump” now, instead of “klang”

I agree with the others; anyone who doesn’t like this product must have installed it wrong.

I have a 2000 Honda CR-V SE. I lined the underside of the hood, the entire roof, all four doors (inside the doors and the surface), much of the floor, the spare tire well, the rear quarters (inside, behind the rear speakers) and lots of the tailgate with two (2x) Bulk Packs (9 sheets each.) I had not planned to line the roof, but after gutting the seats, all trim panels, and all the carpeting it seemed worthwhile. I cannot explain how differently the vehicle sounds now. EVERYONE compliments it (including my wife, who could not understand why I was spending the time and money on the project in the first place, but now wants me to Dynamat her Solara!) The doors go “kfump”. Knocking on the hood, roof, or doors sounds like hitting a solid wood desk. There are NO vibrations or rattles in the car whatsoever (I also got some cheap self-adhesive felt sheets from a hobby store and lined the ashtray, glove box, and little change compartments. Now it’s like driving around with ear muffs on. There is still some road noise, because I have pretty knobby tires, but the incredible thing is that I can no longer hear my exhaust from the rear of the car, and sometimes I’ll look sideways and notice an 18 wheeler beside me that I did not even hear. When I pass vehicles going the opposite direction I am used to the “whee-owwww” as they go by, but now it is a “whiff”, or just silent.

Lining the roof made a huge difference when driving in the rain, but since the windshield is so noisy in a downpour the cabin is still pretty loud, but there is no “ratta-tat-tat” from the metal anymore at all.

I bought a heat gun and the rubber Dynamat roller specifically for this project (though I’m sure I’ll get plenty more use out of the heat gun). I agree with many of the other reviewers that if you do not press this stuff down in FIRM contact with your vehicle that you will not get the best results. I’ve done MUCH (much, much, much, much…) research on this and the bottom line is that this product is so effective because of “vibration damping”, NOT sound blocking. If you hold a sheet up in midair between you and a speaker it will have no effect. If you glue it to the speaker you will virtually stop the sound.

I can also go on about how AMAZINGLY different that my stereo sounds, but I think everyone else covered that. Yes; more mid-bass. Yes; you will hear things in your music that you never heard before. Something that surprised me though was how much quieter your music is OUTSIDE your car. I am not a loud person, and I always turn the volume down at stop lights, and in residential neighborhoods, but one time I stepped out of my car and left the stereo on at a pretty comfortable level. When I closed the door I could not hear it at all. Nothing. Nada. That was a nice bonus.

This stuff is incredible when installed right. Amazon had the best prices in all my searches. You will ache, you will probably bleed, but a weekend or two of hard work should reward you for years. Enjoy!

Expensive but Effective

I decided to go with Dynamat to reduce road noise in my Jeep Liberty as the all-terrain tires were unbearably loud at highway speeds after a few hours. Amazon had the best prices on the bulk packs by far so I bought two to cover all four doors and the floor of my Jeep Liberty. I ended up with two sheets (3 sq ft) left over which should be enough to cover the rear gate when I have an afternoon to kill.

The metal backing is incredibly sharp and it conducts electricity, so a co-worker warned me to take great care to ensure that the wires do not come into contact with any of the edges. It’s no easier on your finger tips either! I found out the hard way that you should not cover any contact points between the trim panels and doors if you want the panels to fit as snugly as they did before the installation. With the great care and lessons learned, all four doors took approximately 20 hours to install and the floor took close to 30 more. I’m certain an experienced installer could have done the job in half the time.

The results of just the doors were impressive enough, but covering the floorboards made a tremendous difference. At 75 mph, I now listen to the radio at 18 instead of 30, which is an approximate 40% reduction in cabin noise. More impressively is the sudden emergence of midrange and punch from the base that makes me wonder if somebody stuck a subwoofer in my console. With no adjustments to treble or bass, the premium Infinity speakers now sound almost worth what the dealer charges!

Despite the high cost in initial expense, weekend sweat, and finger tip slashing, Dynamat has lived up to the hype. Hearing is believing!

Do you want cheap carpet that you may effortlessly install yourself? Well, I once carpeted a big bedroom for a total cost of with regards to $12. You read that right, and no, the carpet was not applied carpet. I did it with carpet samples.

I purchased them for 25 cent apiece at a closeout sale, and it took 36 squares of carpet to finish the room. The only other furnishes I used were the staples, which cost when it comes to a dollar. Normally, you might remunerate a dollar each for squares of carpet. I found them available for half that just a few weeks ago, but in any case, this is cheap carpet.

This is an strange style, though, and you may have to consider the resale value of your home. The bedroom I carpeted this way was in a rental mobile home, where cheap and strange styles are the norm. Ordinarily, you will want to save this trick for areas like basements, playrooms, and perchance a children’s clubhouse. Still, it doesn’t look so bad – actually it looks just fine if you mix the respective colored squares of carpet well.

In a children’s playroom, the multi-colored floor is perfect. It is cheerful and colorful, and if a spill stains one of the carpet squares, you may without apparent effort pull it up and install a new one in it is place. This is a nice vantage of carpeting a room this way.

Installing Cheap Carpet

The only things you will need to carpet a room with carpet samples or squares is a carpet knife and a staple gun. 5/8-inch staples have worked best for me. Begin at any corner. Just put the piece in place and staple it in two or three places along each side. Wiggle the stapler head down amid the fibers, or amidst the border and the fibers, and the staples will commonly be well-hidden.

When carpeting a basement floor, you may use carpet tape rather of staples. In either case, this is best done where padding isn’t too important. Of course, you may use padding too, if you don’t mind the complications, but without it, this is pure simplicity.

You might want to lay out the pieces first, to determine where each will go. When you come to walls, heating registers, and other obstacles, you may effortlessly cut the pieces to fit. If you make a mistake, it cost you perchance a dollar. Just start out over with a new piece.

Before you start, estimate how numerous pieces you’ll need, and call around to find a carpet store that has sufficient samples for sale. The carpet samples at dissimilar stores range in size, but are commonly at least 18 by 18 inches. Using pieces that are all the same size is the easiest way to go. Even at a dollar, this makes it less than 50 cents per square foot to carpet a room. That’s cheap carpet!

Stunning Rug

This rug is stunning and beautiful. Even my 13 year old son commented on how nice it is and he usually doesn’t notice things like rugs. The wool is very soft. The workmanship is to be praised. The rug is well made with a high tuft and sturdy weight. It doesn’t bend up at the edges. The 6′x6′ dimension is very unusual and fits nicely under my smaller, round table.

One thing, be aware the picture of this rug makes the colors look bold and bright when they are really soft and muted. The “ivory” is more a light beige. Some of the pattern has grey coloring. The “gold” is a very light brown/tan. The “red” is a burnt sienna. I liked the rug even more with the muted, toned-down colors as it blends nicely with my other decor but if you are wanting a brighter true gold and ivory look, this rug will probably disappoint in color. The pattern is a bit on the modern side but maintains a traditional feel, as well. It has an Egyptian look to me.

Another note, the price was near $100.00 when I made the purchase. It may have gone higher as Amazon prices change. For the price I paid, I feel I got a steal. It wasn’t much more than a cheep fake wool type rug that Walmart might sale. I searched other web sites and Amazon’s price was by far the best and the only one with this size. I liked it so much, I purchased the 3′x5′ rug to put in the dining entrance. It came delivered rolled with a tie and wrapped in plastic. If it’s a gift, you’ll want to get to it first as you can tell it’s a rug laying on the porch. It unraveled nicely from the shipping roll and with a good vacuuming, it was ready to be used and seen.

Basement floor covering is one of the last things you think regarding when finishing a basement. People tend to focus more on the structural designs introductory (for good reasons!) and then when the project is wrapping up, the items such as basement floor covering, paint and finishing touches are handled. That is normal and fine of course. The structural issues in a basement are a big deal obviously. However, when it comes to picking a floor covering for basements, your decision may be a wise or costly one. Moisture and mildew may demolish most floor coverings. Even worse, a flooded basement may fetch a lot of headaches. If you use the right basement floor covering up front you may keep away from a great deal of issues and even save cash on your budget with the right deal. Commercial carpet squares and tiles have a lot of vantages that make them a perfective choice for basement floor covering. There are 5 reasons why mercantile carpet tile works outstanding for basement flooring.

1. Most mercantile carpet tiles have a hard, rubber like backing. This backing along with the yarn is not harmed by moisture, mold or mildew. In fact, most carpet tile backing systems have mold and mildew inhibitors built into the backing itself. This built in resistance to moisture, mold and mildew make mercantile carpet tiles perfective for basement floor covering. Also, if your basement floods, the carpet tiles may be pulled up and put outside to dry. Once the mercantile carpet squares are arid and the basement is dry, you may reinstall the tiles. One tip is to make sure you use the mercantile carpet tiles with the hard, stiff backing. Some carpeting tiles come with an integral cushion padding. When installing in a basement, this cushion backing may absorb moisture and is not a good option.

2. Commercial carpet tiles are very easy to install. You may use adhesive to glue them down, nonetheless the loose lay method is best in a basement. You normally may install the tiles tight sufficient to where an adhesive is not needed. If you don’t have to glue them down, pulling them up later if the basements floods will be much easier. This also makes tile substitute later very easy. In fact, if you don’t glue the mercantile carpet squares and tiles down, you may pull them up and pressure wash them off if they ever become very soiled or stained.

3. Basement floor covering may see a lot of foot traffic if the garage is adjacent to the finished area. Commercial carpet squares are built to handle heavy traffic. These are the same mercantile carpet squares that are installed in airports, hotels, restaurants, etc.

4. Commercial grade carpet tiles may be used to formulate distinguishable looks on a room or area. Basement floor covering doesn’t have to be bland to be functional. A very usual option when using mercantile carpet tiles is to use 2 or 3 colors to make checkerboard or contemporary designs. Not only does the use of assorted colors (contrasting colors do great) give the basement a architect look, but it hides the seams where the carpet tiles come together.

Great but not perfect ***Downgraded Star Rating***

My wife and I decided to get one of these because our 8 month old son is about to start crawling. While we try and keep our floors clean, our beagle has other thoughts as she sheds all over the place. We went with the latest 560 model as it has just about everything we would want with a product like this. It works as advertised and we will definitley keep it but there are some areas that need improvement. Here is a quick breakdown of the pros and cons

Pros

1. Quieter than a standard vaccuum

2. Seems to learn the room dimensions quickly. The virtual walls and lighthouse feature are very nice.
3. Is “smart” enough to avoid getting tangled in our area rugs

4. Obviously easy to use as it is just a push of a button (or even better when you program it)

5. Can use everyday to keep the floors spotless

6. Have successfully used it on hard wood, vinyl, carpet and (accidently) concrete

7. Cleans under furniture which is otherwise a pain to do

8. Entertainment value – keeps the dog and baby interested for a while!

Cons (or areas for improvement)

1. Fills up fast – Upon intital cleaning cycles, we had to empty it after about 10 minutes. Further usage proved better as the dust/dog hair was a lot less than before. I suppose this is a good thing as it is picking up dirt that I missed with the regualr vaccum.

2. No warning that it is full. This is the one area that would be a huge improvement. I feel like I need to interrupt it all the time to check if it is full. It would be great if it had some way to gauge how full it is.

3. Battery life – Not sure if I am getting the full specified battery life out of this as it seems to need a recharge after about an hour to an hour and a half (isn’t it supposed to last longer?)

4. Automatic docking is iffy. Several times after it was done cleaning, it wandered around aimlessly looking for the docking station. The “lighthouse” feature didn’t seem to help much. I ended up moving the dock to a more open area and hopefully that will work better.

So for my first few days playing with this thing, it seems to do its job rather well with just a few annoyances that really do not affect its ability to clean. We plan on running it once a day to keep the dog hair and dust down to a minimum which will hopefully help our allegies.

Well, I’ve been using the Roomba now for a couple of weeks. I have it run every other day and here is what I think of it now

1. After letting it clean several times, I find I don’t have to empty it every 10 minutes. I can now clean three rooms (about 900 square feet) without having to empty it.

2. My wife and I both agree that we seem to breathe better in the house now. Maybe it is due to less dust in the house (especially under the couches) or maybe its in our heads. Either way, we are breathing easier.

3. The self docking is now working great. I think my problems in the past were due to the brushes getting too dirty and requiring frequent cleaning (2 or 3 per run). Now, since the floors are cleaner, this has not been a problem and the Roomba finds its way home with no issues. I use the lighthouse settings to clean each room separately and then I guess they help Roomba find its home. Very nice!

4. Battery life doesn’t seem to be a problem. I am getting the stated cleaning times per the manual and it seems to be enough to clean the 3 rooms.

5. The Roomba does require maintenance after each cleaning cycle. This requires emptying the dust bin, removing the brushes and filter to clean and, sometimes, cleaing the sensors that may have dust buildup. The entire process takes no more than 2 minutes and, even though it sounds like a pain, will hopefully keep Roomba problem free for a long time.

I can find no fault with the Roomba right now. I might even consider purchasing a second and third one for the other parts of the house. I suppose I can move Roomba to the back rooms on the first floor or the upstairs but that would require too much effort on my part!

I am also considering the Scooba for my kitchen and bathrooms but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I might wait for the next generation to see if the bugs have been worked out of the current models. Also, if Irobot ever invented one, I would jump at the chance to get a robot that will shampoo carpets! Maybe we will see one soon..

***Update 11/19/2007***

Ran into my first problem with Roomba this past week. The side brush snapped off and I was unable to put it back on. Knowing that these brushes need to be replaced from time to time I decided to order some replacements. Finding them on the Roomba site and ordering them was easy. Problem is that I was informed that they are on backorder for 4 to 6 weeks!! I e-mailed support and they responsed asking me for my mailing address, Roomba number and where I purchased it from. They stated they needed this so they could send me a replacement brush (a free replacement brush). I sent them the information with the hopes that they have some spare brushes ready to ship out but was then informed that it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get it out to me.

So in the end, I am stuck waiting for about $75 worth of brushes that I ordered as well as the free side brush they are sending me for at least 4 weeks. The good news is that Roomba still does her thing but the corners and edges of walls are somewhat neglected without the side brush.

I would still recommend Roomba to those who are thinking about it. Just be forwarned that “due to extremely high demand” replacement parts, including brushes, are currently on backorder for the 500 series.

******Final Update 1/25/2008*******

Thought I’d give one final update now that I have been using Roomba for several months. I am still a believer that Roomba can keep your floors clean but it does take a bit more effort than some people will think. I will try my best to break down the cons for Roomba as the pros are pretty straight forward. You get very clean floors without having to pick up a vaccum. My floors have never looked or felt cleaner and this goes for both the hard wood floors and the area rugs.

Now for the cons (none of which would make me rethink my purchase but I thought it would be informative to those who are still waiting on buying one)

1. Although Roomba does her thing once I hit the clean button, there is still some maintenance that is required. Emptying the dirt bin after each cleaning cycle and keeping the brushes clean have actually been a bit more work that originally described. I have a dog who sheds and the hair gets wrapped around some of the brushes. The tool that is provided in the box to clean the brushes does little to help with this. I find it eaiser to get a pair of scissors and carefully cut the wrapped dog hair off the brushes. For those of you who don’t want to get your hands dirty, please keep this in mind!

2. The side brushes break fairly easy. One of the comments I saw in my review is that Irobot now ships some rubber bumpber that helps with this. I haven’t looked into getting this yet but I suggest that if you don’t have one on yours (like me), be prepared to replace the side brush often. I was able to get a free replacement on my first one but haven’t gone back for a second yet.

3. The scheduling aspect of Roomba is useless for me. Because I have a 1 year old who has every toy in the history of toys, I find I need to do a complete sweep of the rooms before Roomba does her thing. If Roomba hits one of these toys, the sensor doesn’t always pick up on it and it will try and go over the toy. This usually results in Roomba shutting down until you restart it. Leaving it on schedule means I need to clean up before it goes off. Its just easier for me to set it off manually when I want it to clean.

4. Noise – While quiter than a vaccum, Roomba can still be rather loud. Unless your house is very large, expect the noise to create a bothersome sound if you are watching TV on the same floor or if you are trying to sleep. You will hear it.

5. Auto Docking – Can’t seem to figure this one out. Half the time Roomba docks itself with no problem. The other half it wanders around aimlessly with the docking light blinking just a few feet from the station yet it completely ignores it. I’ve cleaned the sensors and it still does it. I guess it just has a mind of its own sometimes.

6. One minor cleaning issue – Roomba will sometimes leave a big dust ball on the edge of an area rug when it is transitioning from a hard wood floor to the rug. It appears that the dust ball is wrapped around the brushes at one point but gets pulled off by the edge of the rug when it takes that tiny little step up from the floor. If Roomba goes back over that area, great! dust ball gone. If not, your stuck with a dust ball that you have to pick up (again, for me not a big deal but for those that don’t want to get their hands dirty….)

None of these complaints or even the sum of them all give me enough reason to question my purchase. Since 95% of the dirt is removed including under furniture (which frankly, I never cleaned prior to Roomba!) these minor issues really don’t amount to much in my opinion. Yes, it can be rather disgusting to clean the brushes when they get clogged and I need to make sure all toys are off the floor but that all translates into a very clean house! Keeps the wife happy!!

I’ll check comments from time to time so if anyone has any additional questions, just drop them in and I will try and help.

********One More Update – May 20, 2008**************

Had to post this as it has been somewhat of a minor/major issue with my Roomba. The side brush that spins around has not been the best design I’ve ever seen. I’ve mentioned that it has broken off before and Irobot sent me some free replacements. Well, this continues to be a problem.

It seems that the side brush likes to get caught on things like corners or furniture which then causes it to break off or snap off an arm. I contacted Irobot about it again asking if they could send me some of those rubber bumbers one person mentioned in the comments section. The response was that they found the rubber bumber to have little to no impact on the side brush so they are no longer using them.

They did send me 3 additional brushes at no charge (thank you very much) but this won’t fix the design problem of the brush itself. So I caution people here that are looking to purchase this robot that do not want to fork over additional money for new brushes every coupole of months. I’m Ok with it because I just consider the brushes to be the cost of vacuum bags (and the free ones don’t hurt either!) but in this economy, some people might not have the money to pick these up when they need replacing.

I sitll love my Roomba because of the great job it does and the fact it covers areas I could never reach. In fact, I now have a Scooba to wash my floors and love the job that does as well (although that has an entire other set of issues!!)

*****Update November 8, 2009*****

Oh boy! Changed my rating down to 3 stars. For the last few months, I noticed that Roomba was not picking up as much stuff as before. I changed brushes. cleaned it, took it apart and cleaned it but it still wasn’t picking up anything. All I was getting was balls of dust being left behind.

Went online to find some ideas and followed a few tricks and found that my brushes were not moving. Upon trying everything under the sun to get this working, the end result is the the cleaning head module (CHD) has died. Great news, however, is that Irobot sells these for $49.99!!! Yay, I get to spend even more money to keep Roomba running. I am beginning to believe that the 560 model I bought was the beta version since the side brush and now the entire CHD have been redesigned. Yes, you heard that right, the CHD I decided to order is a redesign that apparently fixes the issues that the original one had.

Since I am in this for so much money already, what’s another $49.99? The original cost was about $380 plus another $100 or so on replacement brushes plus this $50 brings my total to the cost of a high end Dyson vaccuum. Well, at least it does a great job when it is running.

While I love Roomba when it is working, I am finding the the cost and effort required to keep it running (the constant cleaning and taking it apart)might be too much for most people. I’ve read all the forums out there and the problems I have had are very common. And since Irobot keeps redesigning this piece by piece, I assume they are aware of all the issues as well. Hopefully, by the time I am done putting all the new pieces together, I will have a Roomba that will last for a long time before breaking down.

I understand that technology requires maintenance and repair but 2 years should not be considered the life cycle of a vaccuum. I guess gadgets of today are not made as well as they were “back in the day” as my parents woudl say. I will update once I get my new CHD and let everyone know how it works.

****Another Update 11/23/2009******

I got my new cleaning head module and it looks like Irobot has fixed the issues where dirt and paet hair could get stuck in the motor. Only time will tell if this will last but it is doing a great job for me again.

HOWEVER….my battery would not hold a charge for longer than 30 minutes and all attempts to “fix” it per the forums and tech support failed. The end result was a new battery purchase..yes, more money spent. rather than buy directly from Irobot, I decided to pick up a generic one sold here on amazon. I believe I paid about $65 for a generic battery that is equal to the $99 battery on the Irobot store. It is supposed to last longer than the stock battery but I haven’t noticed much of a difference in the 2 Roomba runs since I got it.

So my Roomba is happily working again, just in time for the holidays, and I am hoping that I am done replacing faulty designed parts. I must be right???

******Maybe my Final Update?? 1/7/2011*******

Its been a while since my last update to this review. I guess that is because I haven’t had any issues since I replaced the cleaning head module and battery in late 2009. The newer white side brushes seem to stay in place, the newer style brushes don’t get as clogged as the old ones and my battery (an aftermarket brand) gives me a good hour and forty five minutes (or more) before it needs a charge.

I now have a 1 year old boy to go along with my 4 year boy so my house is in pretty rough shape after the two of them are done destroying it. So I am routinely running Roomba around those play areas so I can avoid bringing out the big vacuum. It has worked well…knock on wood!

I think I have nothing more to say! (unless of course something else breaks!)

******Update 12/14/2012*******

With the holidays approaching fast, I figured I’d drop in and give a quick update. It’s been almost a year since my last update and I am proud to say the Roomba has not given me any issues since the new cleaning module was installed back in 2009. I have swapped out various brushes from time to time but that is part of the regular maintenance that everyone has to do (part of the ongoing cost to keep Roomba happy).

I don’t get to run Roomba as often as I would like as my almost 2 year old is petrified whenever Roomba turns on. I basically have to wait until my wife takes him out for a bit so I can let Roomba clean. My almsot 5 year old could care less when Roomba is running but does complian about the noise if he is trying to watcgh TV. It makes it a bit harder as the cleaning cycles are farther apart from one another so human intervention is needed to clean out the dust bin at least once during the cycle.

Hopefully my writing this update doesn’t jinx me in some way and Roomba will decide to quit on me this week! Overall, I’m still very happy that I have this machine to help with the never ending cleaning of my house (amazing how much 2 boys can ruin in such a short amount of time!!)

A Worthy Successor to the Roomba Line

We have two Roombas plus a Scooba in our house. When one of the batteries on one of our Roombas finally reached the end of its life cycle, we decided to donate that Roomba to a friend and to get ourselves the new top of the line – the Roomba 560. We got this right when it first came out, but we waited several months before posting a review. It’s pretty much impossible to review one of these Roombas after only a few days! It takes weeks if not months to start to see how well they last over time, and what breaks down. Believe me – been there, done that.

So now it’s many months later, and I have to say, we are quite pleased with the improvements of this Roomba over the previous generations of Roombas. So first, for those who don’t even have ANY Roomba yet (hard to believe!). Roombas are awesome. We have cats, and we work from home so we’re home all day. It is AMAZING how much dirt and dust and junk collects in the carpet every single day. Who really has time to vacuum their carpets twice a day any more? With the Roomba, you set the scheduler to do it while you are asleep. You wake up in the morning, the carpets are clean, the air is fresh, and you empty out the dust bin. It is just wonderful.

Even those without pets might be amazed how much lint and such the Roomba will find every morning for you.

I have a noise meter and have done several tests with the noise meter. The Roomba is much quieter than other regular vacuums. It is NOT silent – it can’t be! How could it vacuum up dirt and be silent? But it is quieter than the alternatives, and heck, you’re sleeping anyway. I can easily sleep through a Roomba running.

Now, on to the improvements of this new Roomba over previous models. First, it has a cool feature where the speed drops when it senses it is approaching a solid object. The old Roomba would just run full tilt into an object – wall, couch etc. – and then turn around. This one slows down so that it hits the object gently. Sure the old Roomba wouldn’t dent the walls with its powerful force, but still, it’s nice to have it be gentle on furniture and your building.

Next, for better or for worse, the new Roomba is much more aware of when its bin and brushes are getting grungy. I admit I didn’t clean my other Roombas as often as I should have. And it led to problems. This new Roomba will actually stop and warn you when it’s getting full and when the brushes should be cleaned. If you’re a procrastinator like I am, this is a good thing. If you’re a clean freak that empties the bin every time, and cleans the brushes every time, then you probably won’t even notice this feature.

The anti tangle technology is nice. The previous Roomba would start to eat a cord and just keep going until it was really stuck. This Roomba at least tries to get itself untangled. Still, I don’t recommend leaving cords and strings and things lying around. You’re just asking for trouble if you do.

The new system uses a “lighthouse” instead of just a wall. With a lighthouse, you mark out a room so the Roomba finishes with that room completely before going on to the next room. They are like section markers. We tend to just use walls, but if you have two large rooms the lighthouse feature might be really helpful for you.

After several months of running we have had NO problems at all with our Roomba. No broken brushes, no falling off pieces, nothing. It is still going strong and we are very pleased with it.

Highly, highly recommended! I am happy to give personal advice and I even have videos of Roombas on my website. I love Roombas, they have saved me countless hours of work, and they make my home a much cleaner and easier-breathing place to be.

Beware of the “new” Roomba 560 now only for single room (updated review)

My review in late 2007 describing the red side brush “amputee” problem and poor customer support is still the highest rated critical response on Amazon. Because of that experience, the recounting of which is in the original review appended below after this update, I had not bought an iRobot product in over four years. Now I have bought two “new” 560s, which arrived today (more about “new” below). This update is primarily for (i) previous owners of a 560 that are contemplating buying a “new” 560 or (ii) those that have information on the original 560 and mistakenly believe that this is what they will get if they order a “new” 560.

If it were not for the problems discussed in this update, I would raise my rating to 3.5 stars. Once again, I think iRobot may be shooting itself in the foot. And what upsets me is that I really want to see this company succeed.

By way of disclosure I have owned several of every generation of Roomba. I presently own seven 560′s (five old and two “new”) and two Discoverys (400 series that still work). In the original review, I promised to update it (see the original review at end), so here goes :

PROs:

1. After all the stone-walling back in 2007, iRobot finally fixed the problems of the side brushes by replacing them with a yellow three-armed brush rather than the previous six-armed brush that quickly became a no-armed brush. (If you have a red six-arm side brush — probably no-arm by now, call iRobot for a free replacement).

2. Today Tech Support is MUCH BETTER. Before, some idiot CIO had apparently decided to move everything to an e-mail system, which was MISERABLE. Now you get a human being that speaks English and is courteous and helpful (at least that was my experience with Dan H. today).

3. The virtual walls are slimmer than the two previous generations.

CONs:

1. The “new” 560 is a stripped down version of what iRobot has been selling in the original 560.

2. The “new” 560 is designed to clean a SINGLE ROOM rather than the previous THREE-ROOM system that worked with two lighthouses.

3. iRobot ripped out RF communication of the original 560 without disclosure.

4. The “new” 560 package comes with NO LIGHT HOUSES. iRobot replaced the two light houses with two virtual walls (reminiscent of the previous 400 and 200 series, complete with an on-off switch).

5 The “new” 560s are NOT compatible with the existing lighthouses of the original 560s.

6 The IR remote previously included with the 560 is not included in the “new” 560.

7. Most egregiously. iRobot did not even assign a modified model number to the “new” 560, which, in all probability, may be a deceptive trade practice since the new product is inferior to the original one and there is no disclouse of the strip-down of the original product.

8 The “new” virtual walls do not shut off automatically, but instead have an on-off button (which is useless if you are using the scheduling feature, which I hope is still there). I was told that despite leaving the “new” virtual towers on continually (they no longer turn themselves of because of the removal of RF), they “should” last six months on one set of batteries. Let’s pray. Both sets of virtual walls (Gen 1 and Gen 2) sucked power like no one’s business.

9. The “new” 560 still lack a soft bumper for furniture.

10. The 560 still has a problem climbing above 1/2″. We have a fireplace with a front marble front-piece, which each 560 tries to climb. It is between .5″ and .75″. The result” The Roomba gets “stuck. There is no realistic solution other than iRobot fixing the problem so that if a 560 cannot successfully “mount” the obstacle that it backs off. I know its robots in Afghanistan did better than this.

10. Finally, be aware of iRobot’s habit of discontinuing models, particularly those that will work with the existing lighthouses:

a. The “new” 560 no longer works with them
b. The 610 looks like it’s gone
c. The 572 looks like it’s gone

Only the new 780 ($$$) seems to support the existing lighthouses.

SUMMARY:

In summary, if you are an old enthusiast of Roombas or a previous owner of a 560 using the lighthouse function, this “new” 560 looks like a stripped-down version designed to lower manufacturing costs without adequate disclosure. If you are a newbie, buy one of these if you plan to stick one in EACH ROOM you wish to clean (or haul it in to other rooms — which defeats the scheduling function). iRobot needs to lower its MSRP accordingly for lowering the quality of this “new” product.

PRIOR REVIEW.

I have been a long time customer of iRobot. I have had multiple early generation Roombas (and still have four fourth generation Roombas in my house). I bought two 560′s in September and the side brushes became “amputees” within the first few weeks, with the brushes breaking off.

When I called for Technical Support (not listed on their website: 877.855.8593) I was told it was a “known problem”, and they would ship out the new redesigned side brush replacements as soon as received. Weeks later, still no date and even today “maybe three weeks”.

Now they are hedging on whether it was a design defect. What IS clear is that none of the units on sale have a “redesigned” part, so you may have the same problem I have had. So forget about getting one before Christmas unless you want to go through this same debacle I am.

I have always had the highest respect for iRobot (despite the Scooba), but my faith has been shaken by this product.

*** UPDATE 12-03-2007 (and another part also on “back order”)

BTW, I still have received no replacement side brushes after almost two months.

There is another problem with some of the 560′s (and I assume all of the early 500 series). The original two 560′s I bought in September did not have a “bumper extension” included.

So if you are buying from a retailer MAKE SURE THAT THE ONE YOU BUY HAS A BUMPER EXTENSION INCLUDED. I saw a 560 at a store this weekend with this new piece, which is just a piece of rubber that you stick on the lower part of the bumper and a “slip sheet” to the manual that tells how to place it, but does not say what it is for.

When I called iRobot and told them that I did not receive these with my original 560′s, they first claimed “all of them” shipped with it, but they would order me two — Guess what else is now back-ordered?

I suggested that the bumper extension might be a new “fix” for the side-brush problem, but the customer service representative said it was to keep the “IR sensors from being scratched” by furniture. To defend that this had nothing to do with the side-brush problem, he said that they had had side brushes “falling off without contact with anything” and that definitely the side brushes had been redesigned but no one in technical support was told how.

Here is what I think the new bumper is for:

We have five fireplaces in our house. All but one have a hearth extension height of 1/2″ or less above the floor. The fifth one has 7/8″ above the floor, where I have seen the 560′s stalled, with the 560 eventually disentangling itself (but with brushes soon thereafter falling off!).

I think the main purpose of the bumper extension is to sense a transition in this critical area (7/8″) and be repelled by contact with the bumper extension. IRobot says that this is not its purpose. However, the instruction slip sheet specifically states to place part the extension below the existing vertical height of the bumper.

I will try to update this if and when I get:

1. My replacement side brushes and
2. My missing bumper extensions.

Hold times seem to be going up dramatically. I was on hold for 17 minutes and then disconnected. I then called sales (which answers immediately) and was eventually reconnected to customer service.

Docking station/lighthouses.

It appears that the lighthouses with the 500-series are coded to work only with the docking station or Roomba with which they were shipped. Having two of these systems, I tried the two lighthouses associated with the other one — no recognition. This may actually be an advantage if you have a house with more than one. I just have not seen any documentation on this issue.

As I have said before, I think the Roomba in general is a great product. I just thing they rushed to market with the 500-series before it was ready for prime-time.

You’ve purchased all your cleaning furnishes and equipment, told everyone you know that you have started a cleaning business and now you are ready to begin bidding on jobs and getting down to work. So your next step is to meet with potential clients and put together a bid for their cleaning services. But how do you recognise what to charge for cleaning your potential client’s building?

Start off by remembering that you are in business to make a net profit and earn a living. Sometimes the tendency is to price our services low in order to get our foot in the door. Pricing your services too low may mean you will end up working for very little per hour. And more importantly, will have little left over to reinvest in the growth of your company. There are cleaning companies that charge more than others and have all the work they may handle and there are companies that have lower fees yet are engaged in a struggle to find work! Don’t trade yourself short or you will not be capable to earn a living off your cleaning business.

The rates for mercantile cleaning vary widely depending upon the area you live. Hourly rates are anyplace from $15 to $40 per hour depending on the type of services that you provide, whether or not you’re doing the work yourself, and your company’s overhead and expenses. Monthly square footage rates could run anyplace from $.05 to $.20 per square foot depending on the type of building you are cleaning and the frequency of cleaning. You’ll be capable to bid a higher square footage price for medical facilities versus office buildings due to more specialized cleaning needs. You’ll likely bid a lower square footage price for huge buildings versus little buildings. For example, you may bid $.08 per square foot for a 50,000 square foot building versus $.12 per square foot for an 8,000 square foot building.

You will most likely be charging your clients a per month price and you will need to figure that price by estimating how long it will take to carry out the services that your client has requested. The more procreative you or your laborers are, the higher the every hour production rate. If you’re capable to clean 3,500 square feet per hour, your net profit will be higher than if you’re only competent to clean 2,500 square feet per hour, so adjust your price accordingly.

It’s also a good idea to find out what the “going rates” are in your area. A few phone calls to challengers may be necessary to get an idea of the basic charges in your area. Use a script when you call so you may compare apples to apples. So what do you say when you call? Try something like, “Hi, I have a little business office that I would like cleaned once a week. It is 3000 square feet and has two little restrooms. Can you give me a rough estimate of what you what you charge per month?” The person may or may not give you an estimate. Most contractors will insist on walking through the building, but it is worth a few phone calls so you have a ballpark figure on what cleaning companies in the area are charging.

To estimate what you will have to charge for cleaning a building, get started by doing a walk-through with the building proprietor or manager. Keep track of the following:

* Frequency of cleaning (once a week, three times a week, five times a week). If frequency is one or two times per week, it’s best to estimate your time and multiply by your every hour rate. If cleaning 3 or more times per week you may estimate your time by the square foot.

* Overall square feet

* Types of floor surfaces and square footage of each (carpet, vinyl flooring, ceramic tile)

* Types of rooms – standard office, break room, restrooms. Also note the number of toilets/stalls and fixtures in each restroom, as well as the types of restroom furnishes used.

* Any particular considerations – heavy traffic areas, elevators, strange requests, etc.

* Make note of the specific services the client is seeking such as emptying trash, dusting, restroom cleaning, mopping and vacuuming.

The following services are specialized services and you ought to bid them separately, and list a per-service charge on your bid:

* Stripping and Waxing (.25¢ – .50¢ per square foot)

* Buffing/Burnishing (.03¢ – .07¢ per square foot)

* Machine Cleaning of Ceramic Tile floors (.12¢ – .21¢ per square foot)

* Carpet Cleaning (.12¢ – .25¢ per square foot)

* Carpet Spotting ($20 – $40 per hour)

* Cleaning appliances (microwave, refrigerator) – $10 – $35 per appliance

* Window Washing ($1.00 – $5.00 per pane)

Make sure you take sufficient notes so you may put together a realistic price that is reasonable to the client and one in which you will make a profit. After your primary meeting with the client, go back to your office look through your notes and determine what it will cost you to clean the building. You may have to consult a production cleaning rate chart to determine how long it will take you and your staff to clean the building. Once you have an idea of how long it will take to clean the building you may put your cost estimate together:

* Estimate the time it will take by using a production cleaning rate chart or calculator.

* Determine your labor cost for cleaning the building one time.

* Determine your regularly every month labor cost to clean the building.

* Estimate a regularly every month cost for supplies. This will be a reasonably low figure, perchance 1 or 2% of on a monthly basis sales.

* Be sure to add in a earnings margin!

Add up the figures and you will come up with your on a monthly basis cost. If you have access to a bidding calculator you will be competent to put in a series of numbers and come up with a price. Great product. Exceeds my expectations

After years of searching for a floor cleaner that is easy to use and not messy I found the Haans. I got the Deluxe Total Home Cleaning System and I could not be happier. It easy to use, lightweight and does not soak the floor with excess steam like my old steam cleaner. Just a tip-At first I was reluctant about the floor cleaner because when you first use the steam cleaner on tile all the residue from previous floor soaps come up creating a white film. I did not know what to make of that-talk about getting everything out of the tile. It really did. I cleaned the floor with vinegar and warm water to get all the soap off the floor. Thank goodness that only needed to be done once. It was worth it. Since then my floor is amazing. I can walk in my house with socks and they do not get grungy. I also use the floor steamer on my hardwood floors. For years my cherry floors always showed every smudge and foot print. I began over the years to hate my floors. What I found out was it was not my floors, it was the cleaners. Just like the tile the first time you clean the wood it may look dull. What I found is that as I continued to clean the floor with the Haan Steam floor cleaner my floors no longer show all the smudges and foot prints. The little cleaning system is great also. I use it to clean everything from the bathroom, base boards, grit and build up in the corners, stainless steel, windows to the tracks on my sliding glass doors. It is also awesome on flat stove tops. I love it. Not only is it a great product but I have saved so much money not buying cleaners (floor cleaner, wood cleaner, shower cleaner etc… It is a savings of about $28-35 a month. I never thought going green would be easy.

AMAZING!

I debated whether or not I should buy the handheld steamer along with the floor steamer when what I really needed was the floor steamer for general cleaning. WOW – am I glad I decided to buy both! I put the small round brush attachment on the handheld steamer, and began cleaning the grout on my tile floor. Let me just say that I like things neat and clean, but the grout in my floor is disgusting. I tried everything I knew to clean it without much success. The filth that came out of the grout was SO revolting. That said – it was also so satisfying! The one down side is that the handheld does not hold much water, so with 800 square ft. of tile, it is definitely a weekend job. The down side – you have to wait 3-5 mintues and unplug the steamer to refill the water. I used the floor steamer to clean up the dirt/filth left behind from the handheld. I LOVE this floor steamer! No trigger, no having to push down to create steam – just easy to use – plain and simple! Now – if this steamer stands the test of time, I will be thrilled! I previously owned the Shark floor steamer – it only lasted 6 months before it puked. The Haan WAY out-performs the Shark by a mile! LOVE IT!

I LOVE my Haan Steam mop/handheld!!!

This is definitely one of the best things I’ve ever bought! I have tile floors that are very textured & difficult to clean. With a regular mop/bucket scenario all of the dirt would flow into the grout & my tiles just looked dirty no matter what. Now, thanks to my Haan, both my tile & the grout in between look as good as the day I moved in! Plus, my hardwood isn’t dull anymore. It’s glossy & looks well taken care of.

The handheld is magic for cleaning my kitchen & bathrooms. I even cleaned my oven with it! So awesome!

There are only a couple of things to be aware of before buying:
1. You absolutely need to sweep or vacuum before mopping. The pads won’t pick up crumbs, hair, etc at all. It’s just a mop, after all.
2. The handheld can get a bit unwieldy at times, like in the bathroom when you’re trying to clean the upper tiles around your tub/shower. There is an attachment so you can reach higher, but the handheld itself can be heavy when you’re trying to lift it over your head.

Otherwise, I haven’t had a problem.
